Mrs. Pocock 5th Grade

Hello!  Welcome to 5th grade at Emerson Elementary!  I am looking forward to a great year!  It is always exciting to get to know a new class and their families.  There is a strong connection to education in my family.  My husband, Chris, is a history teacher at Kearney High School.  He is also a basketball and baseball coach for the Bearcats.  We have two adult children.  Peyton and his wife, Taylor, live in Omaha.  Peyton is working at Wired Baseball Development and Taylor is a PE teacher at Omaha South.  Shelby is a student at UNK, studying to be a teacher.  I love to read, scrapbook, travel, and spend time with my family.

I received my Bachelors Degree in Elementary Education from UNL in 1989.  I completed my Master's Degree in Curriculum and Instruction from UNK in 2002.  I started my teaching career at a rural school in the middle of a cornfield teaching 6th, 7th, and 8th grades in one room.  The next year, 1991,  I moved to Kearney and taught 6th grade at Central Elementary.  I taught 6th, and then 5th grade for nine years at Windy Hills.  My teaching home has been in a 5th grade classroom at Emerson Elementary since 2003.  I love it!

Fifth grade includes many new responsibilities for our students.  They are the oldest and the role models for our younger students.  The fifth graders get to participate in Safety Patrol as they work to help keep our students safe during morning and afternoon transitions.  As needs for extra help come up, our fifth graders are always excited to help.

We work hard in fifth grade as we strive to gain all the necessary skills to ready our students for middle school.  I want my students to start taking more and more responsibility for themselves and grow as independent learners.  Our curriculum includes instruction in the areas of reading, writing, language, science, math, social studies, and social/emotional learning.  Students also participate in Media, Art, PE, and Music.
