On Tuesday, April 17 Bookends Used and Collectable Bookstore hosted the first Emerson Poetry for the Playground event. This event served to both promote poetry and raise funds for our playground renovations necessary due to construction. Our students performed poetic reading selections from various poets as well as poems authored by our students. Bookends was filled to capacity with enthusiastic audience members comprised of students, siblings, parents, Emerson staff and notable poets Don Welch and Allison Hedge Coke. EMERSON HIGHLIGHTED IN SCHOLASTIC ADMINISTRATOR MAGAZINE
Students at Emerson Elementary School in Kearney, Nebraska, had a weighty problem. When they stepped on the scales in 2006, nearly 43 percent of them were overweight or obese. As the district began measuring students’ BMI, it discovered this low-income school in the small town of 31,000 had the biggest problem with overweight kids of any school in the area. School leaders partnered with the local university, secured grant money, tapped into free resources, and recruited parent volunteers to turn things around throughout the Kearney Public Schools. CLASS ACT DONATES TO OUR SCHOOL
C.L.A.S.S. Act (Community Leading And Supporting Students) distributed $60,000 to Kearney Public Schools in September. Every year the steering committee delivers oversized checks to each school and shares with the students what C.L.A.S.S. Act does. The annual fundraiser took place in April and raised $116,000.
